The Finer Points
+ WHAT DOES THE REDSHIFT SOUND LIKE?
Being electric, the Redshift will not produce the familiar ‘braap’ of gas bikes - it’s virtually silent. The silent power source gives the bike a huge advantage in that riders can ride in places where they could never get away with riding before - say around your back yard- and they can hear the bike’s tires on the road - giving them even more control.
+ WHAT IS REGENERATIVE BRAKING?
The Redshift does use regenerative braking. When you brake, energy from the rear wheel is used to recharge the battery. This engine braking makes the Redshift respond like a 450, and the amount of braking/regen can be adjusted in the Performance Maps on the handlebar. The extra charge from regenerative braking allows riders to go further and ride longer without a need to head home for a refill.
+ WHAT ARE PERFORMANCE MAPS?
Performance maps are software setting that change the ride dynamics of the motorcycle. The Redshift has several performance maps that allow a rider to change the power delivery and amount of regenerative braking of the bike. Electric motorcycles are easy to tune through software such that the same bike can be great for both new riders and pros. A new rider might use a low map setting with slower power delivery and less regen. An experienced racer is going to want to roll on and feel the full power of the bike trying to rip out from under him or her. The Redshift’s maps allow both types of riders to get exactly what they want out of the same bike with the click of a button. No upgrades necessary.
+ HOW DURABLE IS THE REDSHIFT?
Alta delivers motorcycles that are ready for the trials of the track. Pros like Josh Hill have gracefully landed Alta’s motocross bike off of triples without thinking twice. Watch the video below to see how a sandbagged Redshift Supermoto handled a 30ft fall
+ WILL THERE BE FARKLES?
Yes. Once the Redshift is in production, we will be offering a number of accessories and aftermarket upgrades. Until then, that’s all we will say. However, one easy upgrade we recommend for some - especially mountain bikers: you may contact your local dealer to install a rear brake on your handlebar. Please note: the front brake will be on the right hand side, as with any motorcycle, whereas a mountain bike probably has the front brake on the left hand side.
+ IS THERE AFTERMARKET COMPATIBILITY?
Yes. The best place to look for aftermarket products and parts is at your Alta dealer. Alta is working with leading aftermarket groups to bring the best hardware and customizable components to our riders, but all parts must be ordered through the Alta dealer network.
+ CAN YOU CONVERT THE MX TO A STREET-LEGAL MOTORCYCLE?
The state of California does not allow an off-road VIN to be converted to street legality, despite our bike’s lack of emissions. Many states outside of California do allow such conversions with proper DOT compliant lighting, mirrors and switchgear such as the ones on the Redshift Supermoto (which can be easily installed on the MX), and DOT tires. Online forums such as thumpertalk.com are excellent resources for this info.
+ WHAT KIND OF MAINTENANCE DOES THE REDSHIFT REQUIRE?
Unlike gas bikes which need regular oil and filter changes, the Redshift requires little to no regular maintenance. Other than taking a moment to adjust the chain and check tire pressure, you will not need to take time away from riding to wrench. Additionally, not having to worry about top and bottom end rebuilds will keep your money in your pocket and your wheels on the road.
