+ WHAT IS THE REDSHIFT?

Alta Motors has spent six years designing an entirely new motorcycle experience. Alta focuses on seamlessly integrating high-tech designs, incorporating quality components, and keeping as much of this work as we can in our community. We pride ourselves on creating awesome motorcycles and employing Americans to do it. The Redshift comes in two models - a street-legal supermoto, and a trail-ready motocross. Alta hopes to see these bikes change the way people commute during the week and change how and where they ride on the weekend.

+ WHY ELECTRIC?

Alta’s founders never set out to make an electric motorcycle. Our goal was always to make a bike that would make riders - of all skill levels - better. After considering every angle of available technology, we realized that an electric motor would perform best as it gives the rider total control with linear and immediate power delivery. Having decided on an electric power source, the team then designed the rest of the components around the battery. Today we give you, the Redshift. Learn more about our revolutionary battery, drivetrain and chassis

+ WHO IS THIS FOR?

People often wonder if the Redshift is made for pros or beginners, and the answer is, both. The Redshift’s electric drivetrain enables riders to control throttle response and engine braking through preloaded software options which can be altered through the controls incorporated into the handlebars. Not needing to shift allows riders to focus completely on picking their lines and improving their technique. Whether it is your first time or your thousandth time on a motorcycle, the Redshift will fit your personal riding style and allow you to ride better.

+ REALLY? ELECTRIC?

Batteries and electric vehicle technology has progressed at incredible rates in recent years, but some people still don’t believe an electric motorcycle can match that of a gas bike. If you’re one of those people, we encourage you to find the dealer nearest you and take one of our bikes for a demo ride. You’ll be amazed.

+ WHAT IS THE GAS EQUIVALENT OF THE REDSHIFT?

The Redshift platform was originally designed to compete with the 250 class of motocross bikes, and through the evolution of the design, we've come to realize that the Redshift does a lot of things very well. The Redshift MX makes for an incredible bike on the trail, tackling hillclimbs, racing flat track and competing in EnduroCross. The Redshift SM is as equally capable racing on tight tracks as it is getting across the city in a rush hour commute. Because of this, drawing a parallel to an equivalent gas bike isn't the easiest thing to do. While we consider the Redshift an electric 250 equivalent, it will out accelerate a KTM 690 Enduro. Ultimately, the Redshift MX & SM will be sanctioned by the AMA for competition in the 250 class, but our best advice is to visit a local dealer and demo either Redshift model.

+ HOW DO I GET A REDSHIFT?

Reserve your Redshift here. We began production of the Redshift MX in August of 2016. Currently, reserving your bike is the best way to secure one; however, motorcycles will be available for order through Alta’s dealer network later this year.

The Finer Points

The Finer Points

The Finer Points

+ WHAT DOES THE REDSHIFT SOUND LIKE?

Being electric, the Redshift will not produce the familiar ‘braap’ of gas bikes - it’s virtually silent. The silent power source gives the bike a huge advantage in that riders can ride in places where they could never get away with riding before - say around your back yard- and they can hear the bike’s tires on the road - giving them even more control.

+ WHAT IS REGENERATIVE BRAKING?

The Redshift does use regenerative braking. When you brake, energy from the rear wheel is used to recharge the battery. This engine braking makes the Redshift respond like a 450, and the amount of braking/regen can be adjusted in the Performance Maps on the handlebar. The extra charge from regenerative braking allows riders to go further and ride longer without a need to head home for a refill.

+ WHAT ARE PERFORMANCE MAPS?

Performance maps are software setting that change the ride dynamics of the motorcycle. The Redshift has several performance maps that allow a rider to change the power delivery and amount of regenerative braking of the bike. Electric motorcycles are easy to tune through software such that the same bike can be great for both new riders and pros. A new rider might use a low map setting with slower power delivery and less regen. An experienced racer is going to want to roll on and feel the full power of the bike trying to rip out from under him or her. The Redshift’s maps allow both types of riders to get exactly what they want out of the same bike with the click of a button. No upgrades necessary.

+ HOW DURABLE IS THE REDSHIFT?

Alta delivers motorcycles that are ready for the trials of the track. Pros like Josh Hill have gracefully landed Alta’s motocross bike off of triples without thinking twice. Watch the video below to see how a sandbagged Redshift Supermoto handled a 30ft fall

+ WILL THERE BE FARKLES?

Yes. Once the Redshift is in production, we will be offering a number of accessories and aftermarket upgrades. Until then, that’s all we will say. However, one easy upgrade we recommend for some - especially mountain bikers: you may contact your local dealer to install a rear brake on your handlebar. Please note: the front brake will be on the right hand side, as with any motorcycle, whereas a mountain bike probably has the front brake on the left hand side.

+ IS THERE AFTERMARKET COMPATIBILITY?

Yes. The best place to look for aftermarket products and parts is at your Alta dealer. Alta is working with leading aftermarket groups to bring the best hardware and customizable components to our riders, but all parts must be ordered through the Alta dealer network.

+ CAN YOU CONVERT THE MX TO A STREET-LEGAL MOTORCYCLE?

The state of California does not allow an off-road VIN to be converted to street legality, despite our bike’s lack of emissions. Many states outside of California do allow such conversions with proper DOT compliant lighting, mirrors and switchgear such as the ones on the Redshift Supermoto (which can be easily installed on the MX), and DOT tires. Online forums such as thumpertalk.com are excellent resources for this info.

+ WHAT KIND OF MAINTENANCE DOES THE REDSHIFT REQUIRE?

Unlike gas bikes which need regular oil and filter changes, the Redshift requires little to no regular maintenance. Other than taking a moment to adjust the chain and check tire pressure, you will not need to take time away from riding to wrench. Additionally, not having to worry about top and bottom end rebuilds will keep your money in your pocket and your wheels on the road.

+ WHAT ABOUT ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLES AND WATER

Unlike your gas bike, this one will run under water. Motocross and Supermotos are made to ride through dirt, gravel and mud, and water - and so is the Redshift. The electric drivetrain allows riders to forget about flooding the engine during the ride and to wash down the bike thoroughly at the end of the ride. The Redshift can handle power washing, though we recommend not pointing the water directly into the bearings and seals.

+ DO YOU HAVE SPARE PARTS?

Yes. Alta has redesigned almost all motorcycle components to make the Redshift the high performance machine that it is. Not using off-the-shelf components means we have an excellent product, and that all replacement parts will be sold through dealers and Alta partners. That’s how we built the Redshift - to be extremely robust. Learn about the designs and lifetimes of our custom parts on our Technology Page.

+ WHAT IS THE REDSHIFT WARRANTY?

All new Alta Redshift SM motorcycles are covered by a 12 month unlimited mileage warranty, All new Alta Redshift MX motorcycles are covered by a 6 month warranty, commencing from the date of registration. + HOW DO I RECHARGE THE REDSHIFT?

The Redshift MX has an off-board charger that connects with either a 110V or 220V power-source. The Redshift SM comes with a built-in charger so that there’s no need to lug anything around town with you on your commutes or sprints across town. The SM plugs into any standard household three-prong 110 V outlet.

+ WHAT IS THE REDSHIFT'S RANGE?

Regenerative braking aside, the Redshift Motocross delivers 2 hours of trail riding before needing a charge, and the supermoto has a combined range of 50 miles.

+ WHAT IS THE REDSHIFT'S RECHARGE TIME?

With a 220V power source, the Redshift will charge in 2.5 hours. With a 110V power source, the Redshift will charge in about 4.5 hours.

+ CAN I SWAP THE BATTERY?

Both the Supermoto and Motocross bikes are designed to allow for easy battery swapping. With two sets of hands, a battery swap should take about 10 minutes - although be warned that the battery is heavy. In the team’s experience, charging the motorcycles in between races or during the workday or lunch is much easier than swapping a battery; however, the functionality is there if your use case demands it.

+ WHAT IS THE BATTERY'S LIFETIME?

The Alta Pack is a custom lithium-ion battery designed by Alta specifically for the Redshift electric motorcycles. The battery is engineered for 1000 charge cycles at which point it will still operate at 80% of its original capacity. Like all lithium batteries, the Alta Pack will continue to perform optimally for far longer if the user follows the proper maintenance guidelines.
